The Afghan Junior Faculty Development Program (AJFDP) was a capacity building project for junior faculty members from various universities in Afghanistan. The program was funded by the U.S. Department of State through the International Institute of Education (IIE). The program was developed to introduce junior Afghan faculty to U.S. academic culture, teach them core pedagogy skills, build their English language competencies, link them to faculty and students in their individual academic areas, and acquaint them with the American community and campus life. The program was managed through the office of International Programs in Agriculture (IPIA) with primary teaching responsibilities in the Center for Instructional Excellence (CIE) and the Department of English (DE). The program also involved seven academic departments, faculty and administrators from across campus, and a variety of student life organizations. AJFDP participants had a variety of opportunities to engage with faculty, staff, students and community members. While these varied based on the interests and personalities of participants, every AJFDP participant visited local high schools to observe student teachers and, based on their training, were able to provide excellent feedback.
