Duties: The successful candidate will establish an integrated research, extension, and teaching program to develop approaches for sustainable production of specialty crops (ornamental, vegetable, herb, and/or fruit) in protected environments including greenhouses, high tunnels, and/or climate-controlled growth rooms. The integrated approach may include but not be limited to optimization of production environments, improvement of CEA crop quality, integration of new or improved technology (e.g., automation, lighting, computer controls, renewable energy) into CEA production systems, and development of best practices for more efficient crop production as well as economic and social viability and environmental sustainability. Securing resources from external sources will be expected to support a robust integrated program. The appointee will address outreach needs of the greenhouse and indoor agriculture industry and will teach undergraduate and graduate courses relevant to management of sustainable CEA systems. State-of-the-art laboratory, greenhouse, controlled-environment, and farm facilities are available within the Purdue HLA Department and College of Agriculture. This will be an academic-year position with adjustment for extension responsibilities. The appointee will serve as a member of the graduate faculty and be expected to mentor graduate students and post-doctoral research associates. Numerous opportunities exist for collaborative research within the HLA Department and across the strong research community at Purdue University. Qualifications: A Ph.D. degree in horticulture, plant physiology, or a related field relevant to whole-plant/environment interaction, is essential. Experience with systems approaches and a multidisciplinary orientation, particularly leading to collaboration with agricultural engineers, would be extremely valuable assets. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Prior experience with instruction will be advantageous, and interest and experience in international dimensions of CEA will be desirable.

Compensation: Salary will be competitive and commensurate with professional experience. Academic-year appointment will include competitive fringe benefits and employer contributions to the individual’s retirement program, medical, life & disability insurance, and sabbatical-leave opportunities.

FACULTY POSITION

PLANT GENETICS & GENOME ENGINEERING

Assistant Professor (tenure track)

Duties: The Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture is seeking candidates for a tenure track position in plant genetics and genome engineering. The successful candidate will establish a vigorous, externally funded, internationally recognized research program and will utilize state-of-the-art gene editing technologies such as TALEN and CRISPR/Cas. Research on the application of gene editing technologies in horticultural crops to understand and improve traits, including but not limited to biotic and abiotic stress resistance, nutritional value, or postharvest quality, is highly desirable. State-of-the-art laboratory, greenhouse, controlled-environment, and open-field plant-growth facilities are available within the Purdue HLA Department and College of Agriculture. This will be an academic-year position with a primary research appointment. The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching program in topic areas such as plant genetics, and cellular and molecular physiology. The individual will serve as a member of the graduate faculty and be expected to mentor graduate students and post-doctoral research associates. Numerous opportunities exist for collaborative research within the HLA Department and across the biology research community at Purdue University which is seeking to reinvigorate its plant science programs. Collaborative research at regional, national, and international levels is strongly encouraged. Qualifications: A Ph.D. degree in plant genetics, plant science, horticulture or biochemistry, or a closely related field. Experience in molecular genetics, molecular biology, and bioinformatics, and a multidisciplinary orientation would be valuable. Although the appointment has no formal engagement component, the position has obvious broader impact dimensions in outreach, local and international agriculture and commercial industry interactions.
