Glenn DurhamAfter graduating from Purdue the job market was very competitive and I acquired a job with Thomas W. Hall Lumber Company in Medora, Indiana, as assistant mill manager. After working there for a approximately a year I acquired a job with Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry, as a Improved Harvesting Forester. This job involved working with the loggers and sawmills in the state of Indiana and was focused on implementing new methods or improving existing ones that would better utilized or extends the resource. This was a great opportunity to learn current methods of harvesting and processing the hardwood resource and introduce new technologies into a dynamic environment.

After working for the IDNR, Division of Forestry for several years I became the head of the Utilization and Marketing Section within the Division of Forestry. One of the most exciting events occurring during this time was the statewide forest inventory conducted by the USFS with cooperation from the state of Indiana. The Division of Forestry was able to assist in the data collection process, which gave several of the "on the ground" forester's part ownership in the process and the information generated.

I am currently procurement manager for one of the largest producers of hardwood lumber in the state. Frank Miller specializes in quarter-sawn lumber and we are especially focused on the oak species, but we also quarter saw cherry, walnut, maple, sycamore, beech, and ash. It is imperative that we have large logs to get a wide enough board to be used in the industry, that is one reason we prefer good forest management on the woodlands so as to produce the type and size of log we desire. I oversee several million dollars in expenditures for the resource, which is logs and standing timber, over a year's time. We have at times up to eight persons in the field negotiating for the resource, covering over 9 states in the hardwood region. Including myself we have four foresters employed in those activities. The work is very harsh at times due to weather and long hours, but for someone with a competitive nature it can be very fulfilling.
