Topic: A transporter controls nodulation and root development in Medicago

Root architecture in legumes includes development of symbiotic root nodules in association with nitrogen-fixing soil rhizobia as well as elaboration of lateral roots and growth of primary roots. The Medicago truncatula NPF1.7 gene, previously called MtNIP/LATD, plays an essential role in the formation of nodules as well as both primary and lateral roots. MtNPF1.7 was cloned via a positional approach and shown to encode a member of the large, diverse substrate NPF (Nitrate Peptide Family) group of transporters. Biochemical experiments in Xenopus laevis oocytes as well as an in planta system demonstrated the MtNPF1.7 is a high-affinity nitrate transporter, but also suggest that it has a second activity. Recent results show that MtNPF1.7 has a role in auxin homeostasis and may be a growth enhancing gene.
