Bernard Axelrod Memorial Scholarship in Biochemistry
Established in 2014 by Biochemistry alumnus David Schroeder
(B.S. 1962, M.S. 1966, Ph.D. 1968) in honor of
Bernard Axelrod, former professor and department head of Biochemistry,
for his many contributions to science and education.
Once fully endowed, the fund will support one or more annual
scholarships for undergraduates majoring in Biochemistry in the
College of Agriculture based on academic merit.

Established in 2007 by Biochemistry alumnus
David Schroeder (B.S. 1962, M.S. 1966, Ph.D. 1968)

for his many contributions to science and education.

Undergraduate Research Support
Established in 2006 to support independent undergraduate
research projects mentored by faculty members. Our goal is to
support creative student-led research and provide
flexibility to pursue projects outside the scope
of a faculty member's funded research programs.

Arnold Kent Balls Award
This award was established in 1969 to honor the memory of
Professor A.K. Balls (1891-1966) whose scientific achievements
and personal virtues have madebiochemistry a richer discipline. The award is given annually to a graduate
student in biochemistry approaching completion of their predoctoral program who exhibits unusual
potential for significant contributions to biochemical research. The purpose of the award
is to foster among graduate students the spirit of scholarliness, research, and
intellectual curiosity, which was so well exemplified by the many contributions of
Professor Balls.

Beach Biochemistry Lectureship and Fellowship
Established in 1990 by the Beach family as a tribute to their
enthusiasm for science. This fund supports a distinguished
annual lectureship and, if sufficient income is available, also supports
graduate student attendance at scientific meetings.

Bernard Axelrod Lectureship
Established in 1984 in honor of Dr. Bernard Axelrod,
former professor and department head of Biochemistry,
for his leadership and contributions. The endowment
supports an annual lectureship to address the life science
community on a topic at the cutting edge of
biochemical research.

Don Carlson Postdoc and Young Investigator Award
Established in 2010 by former members of his laboratory, this award will
be given annually in recognition of Don Carlson's life-time of achievements.
Don Carlson was head of the Department of Biochemistry from
1975-1985. He was a great mentor to many students and postdoctoral fellows
who now are successful teachers and/or scientists. The purpose
of the award is to acknowledge postdoctoral fellows and staff
scientists who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments.

Dr. Henry Moses Endowment for Biochemistry
Established in 2008 by Biochemistry alumnus Bradley T. Sheares (Ph.D. 1982)
in honor of Henry Moses, also a Biochemistry alumnus (Ph.D. 1964), who served as
a mentor and professor while Brad was an undergraduate student
at Fisk University. The endowment provides awards to Biochemistry
graduate students to recognize outstanding initial publications.

Henry Weiner Biochemistry Travel Fund
Established in 2012 in memory of Dr. Henry A. Weiner,
professor of biochemistry from 1966-2010. The award
is given annually to help defray the costs of a graduate student
or postdoc to attend a scientific meeting.

Patrick C. Matchette Scholarship in Biochemistry
Established in 2000 to support undergraduates from Lake,
Cook, DuPage, McHenry, Kane or Will counties
