Precision Farming

While other Purdue Agricultural Centers have incorporated GPS/GIS technologies into their operations to a much larger extent, SEPAC uses these tools for various tasks.

Several large-scale research plots are set up and harvested using GPS and yield monitors. Nitrogen, drainage, and fungicide trials are examples of the type of trials incorporating these technologies. It is an exciting new approach to research because it allows for more replications of the various treatments. Because many producers have adopted these technologies, this also allows them to duplicate similar type tests on their own farms if desired.

Mapping and imaging are other aspects of these technologies that SEPAC has been involved with on the farm. Maps were created using GPS after a drainage project in 2007. Building a database of aerial images has proven valuable in planning future plot work and design. The ability to quickly and accurately measure and locate various areas on the farm has also aided management.

SEPAC will continue to evaluate various facets of the GPS/GIS technology and possibly incorporate them into research and management in the future.
