Biofortification is the process of breeding crops to be rich in bioavailable micronutrients. Maize (Zea mays) that is grown presently for food is lacking in micronutrients. My research seeks to better understand the genetic architecture and variation of carotenoid and tocochromonal content in maize. The carotenoid and tocochromonal content of maize is being determined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The genetic constitution of these selected maize lines is being determined by genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) resulting in high density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. This phenotypic and genotypic data will be utilized to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) that correspond to elevated levels of carotenoids and tocochromonals.
