Lionel J. “Bo” Beaulieu serves as Assistant Director/Program Leader of the Extension Community Development Program and Director of the Purdue Center for Regional Development (PCRD).  Bo has played a major role in helping launch a number of innovative Extension programs of national significance, including the National e-Commerce Extension Project, the eXtension “Entrepreneurs and Their Communities” initiative and the Stronger Economies Together (SET) program (in partnership with USDA Rural Development and the Southern Rural Development Center). Furthermore, he coordinated the RIDGE Center for Targeted Studies Research Grants Program in collaboration with the Economic Research Service/USDA from 1998-2017.

Since joining Purdue in April 2013, Bo has spearheaded the development and implementation of the Hometown Collaboration Initiative and the Rural Indiana Stats website, both in partnership with the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs. Moreover, he has been part of a team from Purdue, the University of Michigan and the Ohio State University to launch the Defense Manufacturing Assistance Program (DMAP), an initiative designed to help companies and communities develop action plans to recover from the negative business and community impacts associated with reductions in defense-related investments in the state of Indiana. As a result of these and other Extension CD and regional development engagement activities across the state of Indiana and beyond, he has been able to help garner more than $4M to support Purdue’s Extension Community Development and PCRD activities.

He received his M.S. in 1975 and his Ph.D. in Sociology in 1977, both from Purdue University. He current holds the rank of Professor in the Purdue Department of Agricultural Economics.
