The successful candidate will develop state-of-the art capabilities, and lead technical efforts directed toward the
identification, evaluation and optimization of novel crop protection and plant health products for crop and non-crop
markets through the use of plant tissue culture, plant physiology, cell culture and cell biology techniques. The Team
Leader will establish and manage a small team of scientists, and work closely with members of Technology Acquisition,
Strategic Marketing and Project Management groups to identify and evaluate new technology leads. Furthermore, the
candidate will collaborate closely with in-house and external biologists and other scientists to assess the utility of new
technologies. The individual will report directly to the Director of Biology.
Lead, work in, and foster a safe, team-oriented laboratory environment.
Conduct original research, lead and supervise a team of research biologists and technicians utilizing modern cell and
tissue culture techniques to advance existing innovation projects, identify and evaluate new opportunities, and optimize
production of biological materials and biologically derived products
Establish and manage a plant cell culture, plant physiology and tissue culture laboratory
Coordinate work with whole-organism biologists to evaluate product concepts in bioassays and field trials and optimize
Produce test materials and optimize routes of production.
Develop, review and implement budgets, plans and schedules to meet an ever-increasing and flexible R&D program
Review data to ensure quality and consistent results being generated. Select appropriate statistical analysis for data
interpretation and provide scientifically-valid summaries, conclusions and recommendations.
Supervise the maintenance and expansion of operating procedures and documentation required to comply with State and
Federal regulations, as well as ensuring compliance for shipping and receiving materials on a global basis.
Ensure the generation and protection of intellectual property.
Deliver results and make recommendations as oral and/or written reports to FMC scientists, project teams, Global
Innovation management, and Agricultural Products Business/Marketing groups.
Liaise with Biology, Formulations, Project Management, Bioanalytical, and Strategic Marketing personnel on all
aspects of research, development and technical support, protocol generation, timelines, milestones, and data
Communicate project progress and findings throughout the organization through Project Team and functional structure.
Further enhance technical competency by monitoring scientific and patent literature as well as through scientific
Manage the technical activities of assigned staff, working with the individual(s) for relevant projects
Responsible for the performance, and performance evaluations of staff reporting to this position along with other
administrative duties throughout the year
Works with staff, reporting to this position in developing and executing individual development plans, mentors junior
PhD in Plant Biology, Cell Biology, Biotechnology or a related life science with a minimum of 5+ years experience in
cell biology and tissue culture.
A thorough understanding of all aspects of a safe laboratory environment, with demonstrated leadership in laboratory
Demonstrated experience in managing a laboratory establishing, producing and maintaining cell lines, callus tissue, and
Experience in process optimization for plant or cell production
Working laboratory knowledge of plant physiology and related research techniques
Research and or commercial experience in the induction of plant differentiation as well as the identification isolation of
plant derived metabolites
Proven record of supervising and maintaining standard operating procedures and documentation to ensure compliance
of State and Federal regulations.
Experience in project-based R&D including workflow optimization, budgets and resource management
Previous experience in managing lab professionals, and functioning as part of a R&D leadership group.
Strong customer focus.
High-level of efficiency with lab instruments/equipment in a cell biology/tissue culture testing and scale-up laboratory
