Honoring Philip E. Nelson

Daylong events in tribute to Nelson included a symposium on the world's food supply and an open house at Nelson Hall. Nelson, 75, retired in May, most recently as the Scholle Chair Professor in Food Processing after a 50-year career at Purdue. Nelson's work in food science brought him international acclaim in 2007 as the World Food Prize laureate. Often called the "Nobel Prize for Agriculture," the award honored Nelson for his aseptic processing innovation. The system revolutionized food trade by reducing post-harvest waste and making seasonal fruits and vegetables available year-round and easier to transport worldwide.
