Werner L. Nelson, West Lafayette, who retired in 1985 after 31 years with the Potash and Phosphate Institute, was honored for his contributions to improving crop production and soil management practices. Nelson earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in agronomy and soil chemistry at the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in soil physics at the Ohio State University. He was a faculty member at North Carolina State University and joined the American Potash Institute in 1954. He was named senior vice president in 1967. In that role he coordinated research, education and service programs in soil fertility throughout North America. Nelson coauthored a widely-used textbook, “Soil Fertility and Fertilizers,” and has contributed 15 chapters to other books.
